This is a time of deep reflection for all South Africans, and indeed for the global community. We have lost the man whom American historian Dr Tim Stanley has called “a secular saint for the whole world “, the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Tata, Madiba, so loved by all.
He gave his life for justice, fairness, freedom and peace and today we reap the benefit of his rich legacy. ”For to be free” he said, “is not merely to cast off ones chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
We give thanks to God for Nelson Mandela’s life and we pray that his memory will continue to inspire us to continue striving to live in such a way, a way of harmony, peace and love towards each other in keeping with the spirit and essence of all the world’s religions.
Although we have lost the physical presence of our beloved Madiba, we know that his spirit lives on in all of us as we pursue the noble values and goals for which he strove.
To quote our beloved Mandela once more. He said “’I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying” and this is a lesson we can take from his life – we are all sinners who should keep trying to do better so that we can make our country a better place for all.
Long may he live in our hearts, and in our thoughts, words and deeds
