The Emissaries of Divine Light and Dignity South Africa partnered in hosting an Interfaith dialogue on the legislation of assisted dying held on Thursday 21st August at the Tutu Foundation in District Six.
Dignity South Africa is an NGO established in 2011, whose vision is
“A South Africa where all of us are supported through life’s final journey with compassion, care, dignity and the freedom to choose our own path.”

33 members of different faiths and faith leaders circulated four tables, each table facilitated with a question on this rather controversial topic. We were able to each answer or give input coming from our own experiences and faith perspective.
We all realized how important this conversation is, and that it should continue so as many community voices as possible can be heard.
For me personally re connecting and engaging again with friends faith leaders I have had a long interfaith history with was special, and to realize how important it is to address these issues with family, and create awareness in the wider community. There was huge respect shown, and diverse input shared.
A follow up meeting will be held with Palliative Care practitioners, to get further clarification and perspective, especially availability to more rural communities.
An interesting afternoon indeed, much appreciated.
Mary Frost.
